Our skin begins to age earlier than we think. We just don’t always see the signs until we reach our thirties and forties.
These external signs of aging include lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, age spots, and dull complexion, among others. And caring for aging skin often requires a change in skincare routines.
One of the main causes of aging skin is the decreased production of collagen–a fibrous protein that is the support structure for the inner layer of the skin.
And as we grow older, gaps and irregularities develop in the collagen structure which eventually leads to wrinkles.
And if that isn’t enough, elastin, which works to keep our skin tight and flexible and helps it snap back into place, gradually decreases as we age.
With each passing birthday, the cycle in which our skin turns over slows down and dead skin cells don’t shed as quickly as it once used to. Happy birthday!
But we don’t have to go down without a fight. There are steps we can take to reverse the clock and regain our youth.
If you want to change your skin from the inside out, here are 5 things you need to know about caring for aging skin.
#1 Your skin is alive and breathing
Your skin is alive and is constantly taking in food, processing nutrients and ridding itself of waste. Skin gets its nutrients from the blood, uses it to produce by-products (i.e., oil and dead skin cells), then sends away what it doesn’t need.
The key to having healthy, flexible and youthful skin is to feed it what it needs so it gets all the nutrients it needs.
The right foods can enhance your skin’s natural ability to heal, regenerate and glow from within.
#2 It doesn’t have to be expensive to have the face you want
Getting the face you want doesn’t have to be evasive, time-consuming, or expensive. In just minutes a day, for pennies a day, you can dramatically change your face.
Face yoga postures can be done in just 15 minutes a day to see visible results. And mixing natural face products in your kitchen isn’t only very effective, but inexpensive as well.
The key is you have to commit to it daily in order to see results.
#3 Your skin is a reflection of you
Waking up with clear, smooth, toned skin can make you feel confident, while wrinkles, blemishes and that dreaded double-chin can sabotage your self-esteem.
Whether you’re hiding behind layers of makeup to cover acne breakouts or scars, or perhaps covering sagging skin on your chin and neck with scarves and turtlenecks, just remember this: You don’t have to live with skin you don’t like.
And, you don’t have to pay a fortune to fix it.
#4 Facial muscles play a role in aging
There are roughly between 40-60 muscles in the face. And as it goes with muscles, if you don’t use them, you lose them.
Even though our facial muscles are busy throughout the day with smiling, talking, chewing, laughing and frowning, additional, targeted toning can decrease–and even reverse–the signs of aging.
Building your facial muscles through regular exercise can have a dramatic impact on how you look, which we’ll explore more in #5.
#5 You can improve your appearance
Just as our bodies need exercise to stay flexible, toned and healthy, our faces need it too. By adding regular facial exercises to your daily routine, you can overcome the effects of aging to achieve visible life-changing results.
Caring for aging skin is easier than you think. With facial poses and movements that combine yoga-like postures and face sculpting techniques, you will begin to create firmer, more sculpted facial features.
And with regular practice, you’ll reduce the visible signs of aging, resulting in firmer, radiant, flawless-looking skin.
