I remember having really bad acne on my forehead in elementary school! Who gets acne pre-puberty? I do, that’s who.
I later learned it was really an allergic reaction to some of the foods I was eating, but at the time, it was embarrassing.
And getting rid of these unsightly bumps is what started my love for skincare at an early age. I learned how to fade acne scars naturally by pulling plant foods from our kitchen and concocting some type of natural remedy for my skin.
And by the time I hit puberty—the time period when you’re supposed to have acne–my skin was clear and free.
Do you wish you could just instantly erase the acne scars and dark marks from your face and uncover clear, glowing skin?
It is possible.
And you can do it without using harsh chemicals that strip your skin of moisture or load your body with harmful toxins.
How To Fade Acne Scars Naturally
Mankind was created from the dust of the ground, and the different properties that are found in the earth are found in us. Fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables have the same elements in them that are found in the soil and in us.
Using natural remedies helps to build up our body, giving back what has been lost, depleted or knocked out of balance.
So how do you fade acne scars and dark marks organically? One of the best ways is by using those plants that encourage healing.
What Gets Rid of Acne Scars Naturally?
We all know that prevention is the best remedy, but sometimes we learn that lesson a little too late. So what do you do now? How do you fade old scars on your face?
Start right away with putting together a good skincare routine and be consistent—stick to it. And if you’re not already doing a weekly natural face mask to deep clean your pores, or using a hydrating sheet mask, now is the best time to start.
One word of caution—okay, maybe two words—if you’re using natural remedies to even out your skin tone, don’t expect immediate results. It takes time for the new skin cells to make their way to your skin’s surface. So any treatment to improve your skin’s appearance will need at least six weeks to two months before you can expect to see any real improvement.
And the other word of caution is that home remedies work best on mild acne scars. If you have deep scarring, it’s best to consult a dermatologist for solutions.
So with that all behind us, here are the top ingredients to help fade acne scars naturally.
Increase the Speed of Cell Turnover
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) – So many people ask, Is apple cider vinegar good for acne scars? It’s one of the best solutions I’ve found for my skin. The acids in ACV are known to help reduce the appearance of scars by removing the damaged outer layers of the skin. This process promotes regeneration of new, healthy skin cells.
Because ACV can cause burns to the skin when applied directly undiluted, you should mix 1-part ACV to 2-3 parts water. Here’s the apple cider vinegar I use.
Baking soda – Also known as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda is a natural alkaline which helps to neutralize the pH levels in your skin.
When used as a face scrub, it cleans out dirt and dead skin from pores. It’s a natural exfoliant that’s effective in fading acne scars.
Lemon – So many women choose to use hydroquinone to lighten acne scars and dark marks. However, this ingredient is quite controversial because it can cause irreversible skin damage.
A safer way to lighten acne scars is to use vitamin C rich alternatives like lemon juice. The natural acids in lemon juice even out skin tone by removing dead skin and encouraging new skin cell growth. It’s also known to promote skin elasticity.
Aloe vera – Aloe has anti-bacterial properties which can help the skin heal and reduce the appearance of acne scarring. Aloe vera gel acts as a natural astringent, removing dead cells and excess oil to clear the skin.
The antioxidants in aloe vera fight free radicals which helps to repair damaged skin. In addition, the vitamins and minerals found in aloe vera help to lighten acne scars and diminish scar formation. I prefer using the gel directly from the plant, but I’ve found this bottled aloe vera gel to be one of the best alternatives.
Lighten acne scars
Potato juice – The juice from raw potatoes have properties that can benefit our skin. It’s been found that the peels and juice of potatoes have skin bleaching properties. Used consistently over time, potato juice can help clear blemishes and even out skin tone.
Sandalwood powder – Sandalwood powder has antimicrobial and cicatrizant properties which help in fading acne scars and dark marks. When used as an exfoliant, it helps to remove dead skin cells, making way for new healthy skin cells. Here’s one brand of sandalwood powder I like.
Turmeric – As an anti-inflammatory, turmeric helps promote the healing of acne scars and improve the skin’s texture. Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant that‘s absorbed into your epidermis, promoting healthy skin renewal.
Turmeric is also known to control melanin production in the skin which can help lighten acne scars naturally. Be sure to look for an organic brand of wild turmeric free from artificial preservatives. Wild turmeric is known to be less staining on the skin.
Oils that Promote Healing
Rosehip seed oil – this oil has been found to regenerate the skin, reduce acne scars and wrinkles, and prevent the advancement of wrinkles. It’s also known to help the skin regain its natural color and tone.
If you’ve ever wondered how to fade old scars on your face, rosehip oil is your answer. It’s been shown to improve the appearance of scars over 20 years old. Rosehip seed oil is relatively inexpensive and can be purchased online.
Frankincense oil – this aromatic oil is known to even out skin tone, kill bacteria, and soothe the skin which makes it useful in treating acne scars. Frankincense oil also promotes the growth of new skin cells which, over time, can reduce the appearance of acne scars.
Helichrysum essential oil – this oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties that may be useful in healing the skin. The antioxidant properties in helichrysum essential oil can help acne scars by regenerating new cells and preventing the accumulation of free radicals. If it’s difficult to find the oil in your local health store, it can be purchased online here.
