I knew I needed to make money from home and I needed to find a way fast.
You see, I had just turned in my two-week resignation and would be leaving the career (and income!) I loved one year earlier than planned.
My husband and I had a plan. We had a plan. But a serious incident with our childcare provider prompted a quick response and I knew I had to come home.
So I was scrambling for ways to earn at least part of my income before our savings ran out.
I researched on the internet and joined several mommy groups. I’m so thankful I found some of the best sites out there and I quickly learned that I needed to start a blog.
Why a blog, you ask?
It was the best way to take my skills, talents and life experiences and share them with those who were searching for that information. AND I could package it in such a way where I could earn from sharing what I knew.
So, I started my first blog, RozKWalker.com.
This one step opened many doors for me and I went on to earn over $25,000 my first year working from home.
For some, this figure may not sound like much, and, yes, it was a lot less than my corporate salary. But for me, it was the boost I needed to know I had made the right decision and that my family would be okay.
See, if I could make that much without knowing anything about marketing on the internet, I knew that with additional knowledge, I could go on to earn much more.
And I did.
Now, I want to help you start off strong. I want to help boost your faith and your confidence. I want you to know you made the right decision and YOU CAN earn enough to work from home.
While this post is focused on starting a beauty blog, you can apply the steps and the tips to start any type of blog.
How to start a beauty blog in seven easy steps
Click here to start a blog on WordPress, then use my tutorial below to set it up.
Step One: Choose a good hosting company
If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to start a WordPress blog, then choosing Bluehost for your hosting needs is the best way to get started. Bluehost is a great website host and I’ve had good experience with them.
Bluehost was listed as one of the top web hosting companies in 2016 and you can start your own blog with them for as low as $2.95 a month (use my link to get this low price)!
There are many reasons why Bluehost may be a good option for your WordPress blog. Here are just a few that I’ve personally found to be true:
- Bluehost makes it VERY easy to start a WordPress blog and it’s easy to use.
- Bluehost is extremely affordable compared to other hosting services. You can start your own blog and have it up and running for only $2.95 per month.
- If you run into a snag, Bluehost offers technical support to assist you.
- You can get a FREE blog domain.
- And you can start your blog on WordPress for FREE as well.
- Bluehost allows you to start a blog that’s self-hosted, and this is important if you want to make money from your blog.
- And a self-hosted blog through Bluehost will help you appear more professional to potential advertisers and sponsors (vs. hosted blogging sites like Blogger or Blogspot).
To get started, use my link to go to Bluehost’s home page and click “Get Started Now.”
Step Two: Choose a package and your domain name
The basic plan is a great way to get started if you’re brand new to blogging. You’ll get everything you need to build your site at an introductory price.
Next, you need to choose a domain name for your site. That’s the name you want to call your blog. If you already own a domain name, you can enter it here, and you will just have to go through a few extra steps to make sure you get everything (i.e., you DNS) pointed to Bluehost. And, if you don’t already have a domain name, no worries. You can purchase one right during the sign up process.
What’s great is that you can get your domain for FREE for the first year if you buy at least 12 months of web hosting with Blue Host. This option is the best way to save because you get a cheaper monthly price when you sign up for at least 12 months of hosting, plus you get the free domain on top of that. These extras make it well worth it to sign up for at least 12 months of hosting.
You can click here to get your blog’s domain name and purchase your hosting plan.
Step Three: Set Up your hosting account and choose a package
Once you’ve selected your domain name, you’ll need to enter your account information.
Once you’ve entered your account information, you will choose the hosting package you want.
The regular shared hosting packages are priced in 12, 24 and 36-month terms. You can save more money over time by purchasing longer terms—the longer the term you purchase, the lower your monthly rate will be.
For example, if you want the great introductory rate of $3.95 per month, simply choose the 36-month hosting term. You’ll see several other offers available for the hosting plans, and you can choose any that you feel is best. The one I do recommend is the Domain Privacy to keep your personal information private.
Once you’ve filled in your information and chosen your hosting package, click the “Next” button to complete your purchase. On this page, you will create a password for your account. You can use the Password Generator to create a strong and secure password or create one yourself. To make sure your password is secure and your account protected, it’s required to have both capital and lowercase letters, a number, and a special character (?!#, etc.).
Now that you are all signed up and are able to log into your account, you can get started installing WordPress!
Step Four: Install WordPress
Once you’ve chosen Bluehost as your hosting partner, the minute you create a password you will be automatically logged in and directed to the control panel. Now, just scroll down until you see the section labeled “Website” then click on the “Install WordPress” icon in that section.
If you see options to purchase help with installation, just skip these extras by clicking on the “No Thanks” button. These aren’t necessary for you to get started.
On the next screen, you will be asked for your domain name, administrative username, and password. Just enter this information, confirm that you agree to the terms and conditions, and then click “Install Now.” This will take few minutes to complete depending on the speed of your computer and your internet connection.
I would suggest that you view your credentials once the install is done so that you can write down your admin username and password for future reference — just be sure that you store this info in a secure place. You’ll also get this information in a confirmation email.
Step Five: Log in to WordPress
On the same page where you view your credentials, you can click on the admin URL link to get to your brand new WordPress website control panel. You can also copy and paste the URL into your browser or manually type it in to get to your website.
Select your domain and then enter your Log In information. Now you’re fully installed and you’ll be directed to your Dashboard which is the hub of your site. This is where you can control what your website visitors will see when they land on your pages.
Step Six: Customize your site
Now’s the time to customize your site to fit your style. You can start fine-tuning your site with your color choices, fonts, and styles. In the dashboard, you’ll also find the link to write your first blog post.
On the left-hand sidebar you’ll find navigation links where you can customize your site. The best way to get to know your way around is to click on each tab and explore the options.
- Browse the themes; there are paid and free options available.
- Customize your theme with colors, headers, and social media buttons.
- Upload photos to inspire your site visitors and add clues about your values and services.
- Create your first blog post and main page content.
And if you want to find a pretty theme for your site, Pretty Darn Cute Designs is a perfect place to start. Not only are the theme packages affordable, the site has detailed tutorials to make installation a breeze.
These six simple steps can have you up and running in no time. So, hop on over to Bluehost and get started today.
Step Seven: Create Content
Now it’s time to load up your beauty blog with content that will attract your target audience. Do your research first and find out what problems your ideal readers are experiencing.
Visit popular beauty sites and read the comments. Join social media groups focused on beauty and read the comments to identify what concerns most have.
Next, decide the area of beauty on which you will focus. Whether it’s natural hair, skincare, natural remedies, or makeup, try to focus on one main area.
Create your editorial calendar and plan the posts you will publish over the next month. Be realistic with your publishing schedule so you remain consistent.
