There are so many benefits of water. We know how great it is inside our bodies, but did you know that simple water used on the face could unclog pores and get rid of acne?
I knew what I wanted to do for a living very early in life. When I was just five years old, I used to coax my older sisters and parents to let me give them facials. This was our Sunday afternoon ritual and I absolutely loved it.
My mom would donate a cucumber from our garden and help me cut a few slices. I would then take my “client” and have them recline on the sofa or bed and apply my natural remedies.
Cucumbers would go over the eyes and I would take a simple bowl of warm water with a washcloth. Next, I would gently steam their faces by laying the wet washcloth over their face for a few minutes.
Finally, I would follow with whatever cream or lotion I could find and they would remark how clear, smooth and glowing their skin appeared. I guess I didn’t do too bad of a job because they kept coming back.
Little did I know at age five and six just how beneficial water was for unclogging and shrinking pores as well as clearing up acne. Now I know that water is a powerful natural remedy.
So after many years of research here’s what else I learned about the benefits of water on pores and acne…
How water can unclog pores and get rid of acne
I can’t tell you enough how important it is to drink enough water every day. How much is enough? Well, I talk about the recommended amounts in my post on homemade natural beauty recipes.
Drinking the recommended daily amount of water helps the body and the skin get rid of toxins. This cleanses the skin (and pores) from the inside out. Water keeps the skin cells hydrated and helps plump up the skin making it look less wrinkled.
By flushing toxins and impurities out of the system, water keeps the face clean and fresh which aids in reducing breakouts and acne.
One of the other natural facial remedies I used in my childhood salon was steam. I would boil a pot of water and transfer some to a mixing bowl. I would then have my “client” lean over the bowl with a towel around their head for several minutes (can you imagine my dad doing this? Lol). I don’t even remember where I got these regimens from at such an early age. But my willing test subjects all reported clearer, healthier skin as a result.
Later I learned to add drops of certain essential oils or fresh rose petals for added benefits.
Bonus routine to deep clean your pores
Just as water inside the body helps fight acne and unclogs pores, water on the body is also beneficial. One skincare routine I recently discovered is splashing your face thoroughly with water after cleansing. This removes any residue from the cleanser and deep cleans the pores. It also stimulates the skin, promoting better circulation.
Fumiko Takatsu from Face Yoga Method shares how she splashes her face with lukewarm water 100 times after cleansing. The benefits she’s found include:
- Cleanses the pores.
- Lightens the complexion.
- Makes pores appear smaller.
- Reduces acne, blackheads, and whiteheads.
Some precautions are to avoid:
- Using hot water as this can dry out the skin.
- Rubbing the face while doing this technique.
- Splashing the water in a downward motion; use an upward motion instead.
- Rubbing the face dry with a towel once done.
You can follow this routine with my star anise tightening toner which I love because it has the ability to provide instant relief from acne scars, wrinkles, and damaged skin. And then finish your regimen with my star anise anti-aging facial moisturizer to further tighten and tone the skin.
Water is easy to obtain and cost-effective. Try using it inside and out to unclog your pores and get rid of acne.
